Seminar Summary

The newly-elected Conservative majority government intervened in the Canada Post lockout and Air Canada's flight attendants dispute in 2011. The Labour Minister suggested amendments to the Canada Labour Code might be in order to prevent disruption of services moving forward. These headline-making events are some of the biggest to shape federal labour in years.

In our 2012 Federal Sector Update, we will take the pulse of the federal labour movement one year later, providing insight on a number of issues affecting unionized employers operating in the federal sphere, such as:

  • Influence of the Conservative majority government: How has Canada's interventionist Parliament affected labour relations in 2012? Has it been for the better, or for the worse?
  • 2012 case law update: We will review key decisions making their way through the courts and headline-making labour disputes, and address how these could affect your labour relations.
  • Extraterritorial application of the Canada Labour Code: The C.I.R.B. (Canadian Industrial Relations Boards) widened the extraterritorial application of the Code in 2010. Where do things stand for Canadian companies with international operations two years later? We will provide you with practical advice on structuring your international operations to avoid application of the Code.
